Eros Riccio ( b. 1977) comes from Lucca in Tuscany, where he still lives today. Eros started playing chess competitively at the age of 14. Since 2000, while continuing to participate in over-the-board chess tournaments, he has mainly devoted himself to correspondence chess.
He represented Italy on board 1 in the Final of the 17th ICCF Olympiad (2009-2012) and in the Final of the 18th ICCF Olympiad (2012-2016). One of his greatest achievements was winning the Umansky Memorial (cat. 14) in 2013.
Eros achieved his highest ICCF rating of 2644 in 2017 and had already fulfilled 8 GM norms by then. In his last major ICCF tournament, the Petr Boukal Memorial (cat. 14), he came fourth in 2020.
He is also the record holder on FICGS (Free Internet Chess & Go Server), where he has won all FICGS Correspondence Chess World Championships since 2012.
As a keen opening specialist, Eros developed digital opening books in the early 2000s that were used in Computer Chess World Championships, in 2004 for the program Falcon and in 2006 for Diep.
When a new type of ‘Advanced Chess’ tournament (human + machine) emerged on the internet around 2005, called ‘Freestyle Chess’, he became one of the top players in this discipline.
Now that chess has finally made its way into Italian schools, as he says, Eros teaches children aged 7 to 10 there. Since his life revolves mainly around chess, he has little time for other activities and cultural interests, but that doesn't really bother him.
