Aleš Borštnik

Correspondence Chess Grandmaster (GM) 2012

- Slovenia -

I am 62 years old, married and have three sons.
My hobbies: orienteering, badminton, skiing and chess.”

Aleš began his correspondence chess career 21 years ago in national competitions in Slovenia and came second in the 2nd Slovenia WS CC Final (2006-2008). From the outset, the consistency of his performances was striking, soon making him a sought-after team player. For many years, he represented Slovenia at European Championships and Olympiads as a player and team captain.

He became a correspondence chess GM in 2012 when he earned his second norm in the Candidates Tournament for the 30th World Championship, completely outplaying the competition, WCCC30CT08 (2010-2013; 7 wins and 3 draws, 2 points above the GM norm and performance rating over 2800). What times those were, which will never (?!) return. He then earned four more GM norms, two of them in Olympic finals, and received a special award, the gold medal for the best performance on board 3 at the 18th Olympiad (2012-2015), as well as the silver medal on board 1 at the 20th Olympiad (2016-2019). With his team he earned silver medal at the 18th Olympiad and four medals at the European Championships.

Aleš has qualified for the World Championship finals twice so far. In the final of the 29th World Championship (2015-2018), he finished in the middle of the field with 8 out of 16; and the final of the 34th World Championship did not start until December 2024.
Since 2016/17, his rating has been hovering around the 2600 level.
